MI Man Dies While Hiking At Pictured Rocks In U.P.: Officials
A west Michigan man died Wednesday while hiking at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula, according to park officials.
MUNISING, MI — A west Michigan man died Wednesday while hiking at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula, according to the National Park Service.
Steven Poppema, 45, of Holland, was found dead near the Coves Campground after officials received reports that he was unconscious and exhibiting signs of distress while hiking toward Spray Falls, according to the National Park Service.
The Alger County Sheriff’s Office deployed a marine response vessel to the area while additional personnel responded on foot, according to the National Park Service.

"We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Steven Poppema," said Park Superintendent David Horne. "We thank our agency partners for their assistance in responding to this incident."
