Tlaib, Levin Fined For DC Abortion Rights Protest: Ethics Panel
Seventeen lawmakers were arrested during an abortion protest earlier this month. The House Ethics Committee says they'll pay small fines.

MICHIGAN — Metro Detroit Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Andy Levin will not face further action from the House Ethics Committee after they were arrested, along with 17 other Democratic lawmakers, by Capitol Police for blocking traffic outside the U.S. Supreme Court while protesting for abortion access.
Tlaib and Levin were among numerous other high-profile Democrats such as U.S. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Barbara Lee of California that were arrested in the protest. At the time, 35 people in all were arrested for crowding, obstructing or incommoding, police said.
On Friday afternoon, the House Ethics committee said it convened Wednesday to consider the arrests.

"Each of the arrested Members informed the Committee they have paid or intend to pay the $50 fines related to their arrests. The legal proceedings related to the arrests are expected to be resolved with no further action," the committee said.
The panel said it voted against impanelling an investigative subcommittee on the matter.

"The Committee considered the scope and nature of the conduct described above and determined that review by an investigative subcommittee is not required in this matter," the committee said, adding it will "take no further action," and "considers the matter closed."
Both Tlaib and Levin are seeking reelection to U.S. Congress and face tough Democratic primary's on Aug. 2. Both have called for expanding the U.S. Supreme Court and ending the Senate's filibuster to make abortion rights a federal law.
