MICHIGAN — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer threw her full support behind Vice President Kamala Harris Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Whitmer, who is co-chair of the Harris-Walz campaign, portrayed Harris as someone who understands every day Americans and can lead the country.

Whitmer shared a brief story about caring for her mother who was battling brain cancer, and related the life experience to whom she is fighting for, "people just trying to make it."

"Kamala Harris knows who she's fighting for, too. She took care of her mom who also battled cancer. As president, she'll fight to lower the cost of health care and elder care for every family. She's lived a life like ours. She knows us," Whitmer said.

On the other hand, Whitmer said Donald Trump doesn't understand the average American or the challenges they face in everyday life.

"You think he understands that when your car breaks down, you can't get to work? No! His first word was probably 'chauffeur,'" Whitmer said. "You think he's ever had to take items out of the cart before checking out? Hell, you think he's even been to a grocery store? That's what the chauffeur is for."

Whitmer closed her speech by saying no one knows what the next four years will bring us, but that the nation needs a leader whom Americans can trust during a crisis that disrupts daily routines.

She questioned "what if it's that man from Mar-a-Lago," a reference from 2020 when then President Donald Trump referred to Whitmer as "that woman from Michigan."

"I know, in a crisis, we need someone strong enough to come up with a plan, tell the truth and bring people together," Whitmer said. "Right now, before the crisis, is when we get to choose. Why wouldn’t we choose the leader who’s tough, tested and a total bad ass."
