📰 News we're reading

1. MDOT plans to add flex lanes to I-94 through Ann Arbor-Saline Rd. and State St. (wemu.org) — Drivers in Ann Arbor should expect big changes on I-94, as MDOT plans to add flex lanes between Ann Arbor-Saline Road and the US-23 interchange within its 2027–2031 program. The project aims to ease rush-hour congestion and reduce crashes without widening the highway, though environmental and noise studies will come first and construction isn’t expected until around 2031.

2. Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti now linked by 18-mile fiber optic network (mlive.com) — Ann Arbor has switched on a new 18-mile fiber backbone linking the city with Ypsilanti, expanding the existing A2 I-NET and downtown Technology Park network. The city owns and operates the underground system, offering excess capacity as dark fiber for businesses, institutions, and telecom providers. Officials say the redundant routes are built for long-term growth and stronger broadband competition.

3. Invitation: Tapestry of Promise Conference Saint Francis, Ann Arbor (dioceseoflansing.org) — St. Francis of Assisi Parish on E Stadium Blvd is hosting the three-day Tapestry of Promise conference in Ann Arbor from November 19–21, 2026. The event will explore how Old Testament events prefigure Jesus, with talks from several well-known Catholic speakers. Discounted early-bird tickets, including student and clergy rates, are available through September 5.

4. White student enrollment at Ann Arbor Open at Mack School in 2024-25 (annarbortimes.com) — Ann Arbor Open at Mack School’s white student enrollment dipped to 355 in 2024-25, making up about 70% of its 508 students. The story tracks a decade-long decline in the share of white students at the school and compares enrollment with other Ann Arbor Public Schools, while noting statewide funding levels that support local classrooms.

5. Eligible SNAP recipients can use benefits at these Ann Arbor area restaurants (mlive.com) — SNAP recipients in the Ann Arbor area who are seniors, disabled, homeless, or spouses of eligible participants can now use their Bridge Cards for hot meals at eight local restaurants. Washtenaw County health officials and restaurant owners say the Restaurant Meal Program tackles food insecurity while supporting small businesses. More eateries are being recruited, and eligibility details are available through MDHHS and county websites.
