Berkley Councilmember Receives Statewide Award

Berkley City Councilmember Steve Baker received the Jim Sinclair Exceptional Service Award during the Michigan Municipal League’s annual Capital Conference Awards in Lansing Tuesday. The award, presented annually, recognizes elected officials that show passion for and commitment to public service.

“This award was both a tremendous honor and a pleasant surprise,” said Baker in a statement. “My approach is to just do what comes naturally, serving our community, region, and state with enthusiasm.”

After being elected to city council for the first time in 2009, Baker’s work includes support for “Complete Streets,” a Berkley ordinance aimed at improving accessibility of roadways. The awards are celebrating their tenth anniversary, and Baker received his prize from Ferndale Councilmember Melanie Piana, vice president of the League Board of Trustees.

“Simply put, Steve Baker makes local government fun,” Piana said in a release. “A planner at heart, Steve wants the best for communities. He is highly enthusiastic and one of the nicest, most courteous people you’ll meet.”

“That’s the thing about Steve – when you need him, he’s there,” Berkley Mayor Dan Terbrack said of his colleague. “He cares about the residents and the stakeholders, and he wants to make sure things are done the right way.”
