SUV Was Moving 100+ MPH In Deadly Oakland County Fiery Crash: Police

The driver has been charged in connection with the crash that killed his passenger, according to police.

BERKLEY, MI — A man has been charged in connection with a fiery crash that killed another man last month in Berkley, according to police.

The crash happened at 10:14 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and Henley Street in Berkley, according to police.

Police said Marquis D. Jackson was speeding over 100 miles per hour in a 2021 Chevy Blazer when he slammed into a tree, setting the SUV ablaze.

Officials arrived and found Jackson in the driver's seat and 51-year-old Eugene Garnett, of Warren, in the passenger's seat, according to police.

Police said Garnett was killed in the crash, while Jackson was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated.

Investigators later determined that Jackson was driving while under controlled substances with his alcohol level double the legal limit.

Police did not release any other details about the crash.

Jackson was charged with operating under the influence causing death (a 15-year felony).

He was placed in jail with a $200,000 bond. He is also required to wear an alcohol tether and is not allowed to drive a car if he is released from jail.

His next court date is Oct. 16.
