Berkley Wins Two Individual Medals, Places 6th at OAA Swim Championships

"All our guys beat their old times, shaving seconds off, and we worked very hard this season, and I am proud of our team," Berkley coach Becka Jenzen said.

The Oakland Activities Association Red Division championship came down to the wire Friday night, and though Birmingham Seaholm prevailed, two Berkley swimmers took home top honors in individual races.

In the diving competition, Elliot Littman of Berkley finished first, scoring 468.10 points, followed by Tommy Fink of Seaholm with 301.75.

“Littman did an outstanding job, and going to states four years in a row, I am proud of him,” Berkley diving coach Ron Kinas said.

Berkley also made some noise with Jeremy Raisky winning the butterfly with a pool record of 51.14 seconds.

“All our guys beat their old times, shaving seconds off, and we worked very hard this season, and I am proud of our team,” Berkley coach Becka Jenzen said. "We had a great meet, and they all stepped today, and all that hard work paid off today."

Seaholm took home the crown with 507 points, while Groves finished second with 497 points. Berkley finished sixth.

Birmingham Seaholm placed well in the first four events with 201 points. Seaholm finished second in the 200-yard medley relay, and Spencer Rogers won the 50 freestyle.

“Our state meet swimmers are not all the way rested, and today, we had to learn in how we swam today to apply that toward states,” Birmingham coach Tom Wyllie said. “It was a great win for us."

The defending state champs put on an impressive show as Groves swept the relays, winning the medley relay, the 200-free relay and setting an OAA record in the 400-free relay with a 3:10:72 finish. Rob McGowan set a pool record with a time of 46.56 in the 100 free.

“We rose to the occasion today, and we have come a long way since Thanksgiving, and we did what we had to do,” coach Emerald Tide said. “For us, this is our last meet before we get really excited for state meets. It is for us every year, and Seaholm being tough, we are going against some real good competition."

For Seaholm, it marks the second time the team has beaten Groves this season.

Berkley finished the season ranked 15th in the state under first-year coach Janzen and will send seven swimmers and two divers to states in March.
