Cop Who Saved Man From Burning Minivan: 'I'm No Hero'

A St. Clair Shores police officer is shunning the hero label after saving a 60-year-old man from a burning vehicle earlier this week, according to a Detroit Free Press report.

Officer Jake LaTour, a 20-year veteran on the force, told the Free Press he was just in the right place at the right to do β€œthe right thing” when he pulled a Grosse Pointe man from a minivan that was on fire June 2, on Harper Avenue.

LaTour, 49, credits the help from the other people at the scene from helping turn a potential tragedy into a story with a relatively happy ending, the report stated. A retired Detroit police officer, a nurse and three other people all aided in rescuing the man, the report added.

Two people β€œselflessly went up to the van,” according to LaTour, and one individual even brought two fire extinguishers to the scene, according to the report.

β€œI am not a hero and kudos to those other people,” LaTour told the newspaper.
