ABOUT AXIS

Founded in 1996, Axis Music Academy is Michigan’s premier source for music education. They offer private music lessons and classes in two academies or at the student's own home. They teach all ages -- currently from 4 to 88 -- in all styles and levels of music and instruments. All private programs use a customized curriculum, as no two students learn in the same way. Day, evening, and weekend music lessons are available all year long.

"The school currently has five full-time employees and about 30 music instructors," says Donny Klemmer, Marketing Director. "We have students from about a dozen different school districts that get private lessons from us. We also offer public performance opportunities to our students as part of our promise to them." Axis students have recently performed at the Detroit Zoo, Cranbrook Science Institute, The Maple Theater, The Rustbelt Market, and Eastern Market in downtown Detroit.

HISTORY

Established in 1996 in Southfield, Michigan, Axis Music began as a tiny, four-studio guitar lesson business. Over the following few years, founder and Musicians Institute graduate John Antone molded what is now known as Axis Music Academy, expanding to new lesson programs, over 10 other instruments, 40 private lesson studios, a media lab and much more. John and his staff developed a modern, proprietary method to teach you everything that you need to know to become a great musician. Their primary goal is to help you reach your own goals while maintaining all the necessary elements of proper music education. The Axis website says: "We deliver a fun and effective learning experience by customizing the content of each lesson just for you."

FAMOUS GRADUATES

Some of their best-known graduates include Jena Irene Ascuitto ("American Idol" runner-up), Malaya Watson ("American Idol" 7th place finisher), Callaghan Belle, and Jessica Hernandez (from Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas, a local band that is becoming very popular).

FACILITIES

Both academies are modern, clean, well-lit, and comfortable. Their promise: "No more basements, dark warehouses, or back rooms, and equally importantly, no distractions or sales pitches while you’re learning to play." All of the music materials and gear students need are available to them at any time. Practice rooms and organized practices are available by appointment every day. Axis Music Academy uses only state-of-the-art equipment, technology, and learning tools, from books and videos to digital music files and specialized gear.

METHOD

During each Axis Music private lesson, the four essential elements of the Axis Method are covered:

• Theory: Become familiar with time signatures, song structures, musical modes, and instrumentation.
• Vocabulary: Learn essential music terms, read notation, tablature, chords, and identify symbols and signs.
• Technique: Get your hands on your instrument, play solo or with accompaniment, master the metronome, and develop a repertoire of chords and tunes.
• Fun Stuff: Learn your favorite songs, develop your own playing style, improvise with your instructor, write original music, and whatever else motivates and excites you!
