Birmingham Council Removes Parking Lot from Poppleton Park Plan

Unanimous vote cast in response to public outcry to losing green space.

(Originally published on Dec. 13, 2016) BIRMINGHAM, MI — The Birmingham City Commission voted 7-0 Monday to remove an 88-space parking lot out of a conceptual master plan for the Poppleton Park off Woodward Avenue after hundreds of residents said they would rather see green space preserved, The Birmingham Eccentric reports. Officials have been wrangling for months about what types of improvements to make to the 17-acre park, the second-largest public green space in Birmingham.

“I cannot even count how many communications we received on this issue,” Commissioner Stuart Sherman said of the proposed parking lot. “This is a park concept plan, not a parking concept plan. It’s really why we’re here tonight.”

The park will have ADA-approved playground equipment, walking trails, a picnic shelter, new trees, improved drainage and new portable toilets.
