Birmingham's Senior Citizens No Longer Locked Out

BIRMINGHAM, MI — Senior citizens in Birmingham who find themselves in a temporary situation that hinders their ability to open the door to their home in case of an emergency can apply for a residential Knox Box which will enable emergency service personnel to gain entry to their residence quickly and without damage to the door.

The Knox Boxes are being provided on a loaner basis, free of charge, thanks to generous funding by the Foundation for Birmingham Senior Residents.

A Knox Box is a small safe containing the homeowner’s house key, and is affixed to an entry/exit door of the home. The box can only be opened by a specially cut key belonging to the Birmingham Fire Department. To access the key, the officer must enter a code that is specific to him/her for security measures.

“This program is ideal for those who are temporarily immobile following an injury or medical procedure,” said Rackeline Hoff, Birmingham mayor and chairperson of the Foundation for Birmingham Senior Residents. “The Foundation is pleased to provide funding for this important program for seniors.”
