BIRMINGHAM,MI – Your cash won’t be good at the city of Birmingham’s Chester Street parking structure later this month.

Instead of cash, credit cards will be required to pay for parking. If you don’t have a credit card, go to the central parking office located next to the entrance and receive a special debit card.

The system will not require parkers to use a ticket when exiting, which will prevent backups from occurring when a driver is stopped at the exit and unable to locate their ticket.

“These enhancements have worked well at parking structures in other communities,” Birmingham City Engineer Paul O’Meara said. “This equipment is more reliable and offers people a fast and efficient way to get in and out of the structure.”

Those who are monthly permit holders will be given new access cards that will simply be held up to a scanner at the entrance and exit, shown in the photo bove.

The new equipment will be installed on Saturday, April 23 by SP+, a professional parking and ground transportation provider. The equipment will be operational beginning Monday, April 25.
