Civil War Re-Enactors Bring American History to Life for DCDS Middle School Students

Eighth grade lesson goes beyond the classroom with interactive activities, live cannon demonstration.

Eighth grade students at Detroit Country Day Middle School got a taste of the past today, when members of the Battery K 9th Michigan Light Artillery Civil War Reenactment Association transformed the campus into an historic battlefield, complete with formations of Civil War soldiers in uniform along with full gear and the firing of a live cannon.

“At Detroit Country Day, we are committed to developing students who are not only academically well-rounded, but who are excited about learning,” said Kevin DuRoss, DCDS History Department Chair. “By bringing the Civil War reenactment group to campus, our students are able to experience history in an impactful and tangible way. The Civil War reenactment group has shared their knowledge and passion with our students for the last decade, and they are always one of the highlights of the year.”

The interactive content is an extension of the lessons covered in the classroom. The exciting and experiential day of activities includes learning about the different artillery used in the Civil War, tactics on the battlefield and the leisure activities of the soldiers. Students line up in regiments and in unison march to orders across the field. For most students the best part of the lesson is at the end, when they witness the firing of an authentic cannon.
