Entrepreneur Wraps Mom's Memory in Love

Karen MacDonald's company, Wrapped In Love, designs fashion accessories to give hospital patients dignity.

The former communications director for Taubman Centers Inc. decided to launch a line of merchandise for hospital patients after a heartbreaking conversation with her mother around Christmastime last year.

“My mom was in the hospital before she passed away,” MacDonald told The Birmingham Eccentric/Hometownlife.com. “It was Christmas Eve and she didn’t want to see anyone because she didn’t like the way she looked. I decided to make her a wrap to go over her patient gown, to make her feel special and pretty.”

Nurses at the hospital said her mother “seemed to light up” in the pretty wrap fastened with a flower pin, MacDonald told DBusiness.

The wrap hid the hospital gown that reminded her mother of her illness, “even for just a bit,” MacDonald said, adding, “I wanted to help others express their sentiments for any occasion, especially when someone dear in their life is receiving medical treatment.”

That’s how MacDonald’s company, Wrapped in Love, was born.

The company designs cowls and ponchos, scarves, head wraps and other fashion accessories. MacDonald worked closely with the medical community to design garments that would meet both her goal of giving patients dignity and caregivers’ need for access to administer medical treatments.

“They are accessories that are easy to wear for those who may have limited mobility,” MacDonald told The Birmingham Eccentric. “The wraps come in a variety of styles, colors and fabrics. I designed everything as ‘one-size-fits-most’ so you can give them as gifts and not have to worry about the size.”

The accessories are available online, or in retail shops in St. Clair Shores, West Bloomfield Township, Royal Oak, Pleasant Ridge, Grosse Pointe Woods and Sarasota, FL.

MacDonald is donating 10 percent of fourth quarter sales to the American Cancer Society in her mother’s memory.
