Police Investigating New Scam Targeting Birmingham Seniors

The caller claims to be a special investigator with the IRS who attempts to obtain financial information with a phony story about tax fraud.

The Birmingham Police Department has received approximately 20 complaints in the last few days regarding a new type of phone scam targeting senior citizens.

The caller claims to be a “special investigator” with the IRS and attempts to solicit personal information about the resident by claiming they’re involved in some type of tax fraud. If the resident doesn’t answer, the caller leaves a message saying the resident or their attorney need to call back immediately to clear up the matter.

The calls are showing up on caller ID’s as coming from Washington DC. The caller(s) all have an East Indian or Middle-Eastern accent and most likely originate from overseas, police said.
