Bloomfield Township Electoral College Representative, 22, Getting Death Threats

Republican Michael Banerian has filed a police complaint over messages he's received.

(Originally published on Dec. 8, 2016) BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI — Michael Banerian, 22, of Bloomfield Township, the Michigan Republican Party's youth vice chair, sys was honored to be selected to be one of the state's 16 Electoral College voters who will officially elect Donald Trump on Dec. 19.

He told The Birmingham Eccentric he knew the election would be divisive. The death threats the young elector is getting are a surprise, though.

Michigan electors are bound by law to cast their votes for the winner of the popular vote in the state. Banerian said he has been pressured by people who want him to flip his vote to Hillary Clinton. Many of the callers had an angry tone, some of theatened his personal safety.

So he filed a police report with Bloomfield Township police on Dec. 1.

“I began receiving threatening messages a couple of days before the election and they trickled in the weeks following that,” said Banerian, who will graduate this month from Oakland University with a bachelor’s degree in political science. “All of these threats, death wishes and generally angry messages were a direct response to my support for Donald Trump and being a Republican in general.”
