Hours-Old Baby Found Along Dirt Road with Umbilical Cord Attached
The baby's teenage mother is in fair condition at a western Michigan hospital. It's not clear if she will be charged.
A newborn found abandoned under a satellite dish along a dirt road with the umbilical cord still attached is in fair condition.
The hours-old infant was discovered about 10:30 a.m. in Newaygo County in west central Michigan by a man who was walking his dog, WZZM-TV reports.
The dog spotted the baby, who was not crying at the time. Authorities believe the infant, who had some bumps and bruises, had been born about six hours earlier. She was breathing on her own when she was discovered.

The baby’s mother , who appeared to be in good health, was located at a house across the road, MLive reports. She is 14 or 15 years old, according to reports.
Authorities haven’t speculated on why they think girl abandoned her daughter. It’s unclear whether she will face charges.

Infants may be surrendered within 72 hours of birth to emergency service providers – for example, at hospitals,and police and fire stations – under Michigan’s safe haven law, according to the National Safe Haven Alliance, which supports states’ efforts to prevent infanticide and newborn abandonment.
