One of the obvious choices is veterinary medicine, but that takes years of schooling.

Vet school applicants must have an undergraduate degree — most likely with a heavy emphasis in science and math — and then complete another four years at one of about 30 accredited vet schools in the United States, including one at Michigan State University.

After obtaining their degrees and passing their state’s board exams, veterinarians typically complete internships before going into private practice, where they can expect earn between $70,000 and $150,000 annually, according to the career web site uvisor.com.

Another option is to work as a dog sitter or walker for people who have pets, but don’t have the time to take them on dog walks, or don’t want to leave them alone while they’re at work or on vacation. In most cases, no training is necessary and the only prerequisites are a good reputation for reliability and a love for dogs and other animals.
