After obtaining their degrees and passing their state’s board exams, veterinarians typically complete internships before going into private practice, where they can expect earn between $70,000 and $150,000 annually, according to the career web site uvisor.com.

If the educational threshold is intimidating of financially out of reach, veterinary assistants may be an option. On-the-job training is often offered, but a trade school can offer certificate programs. Typically, uvisor.com says, vet assistants can expect to earn between $10 and $15 an hour.

Another option is to work as a dog sitter or walker for people who have pets, but don’t have the time to take them on dog walks, or don’t want to leave them alone while they’re at work or on vacation. In most cases, no training is necessary and the only prerequisites are a good reputation for reliability and a love for dogs and other animals.
