McCready bill allows township supervisors to perform marriages

State Rep. Mike McCready introduces bill to allow township supervisors to perform marriage ceremonies

State Rep. Mike McCready of Bloomfield Hills was joined today by Bloomfield Township Supervisor Leo Savoie to speak before the House Judiciary Committee in support of legislation McCready introduced to allow township supervisors to perform marriage ceremonies.

“Over the years, I’ve had numerous people request for me to marry them and I have not been able to do that,” Savoie told members of the committee.

Under current law, district court judges, district court magistrates, municipal judges, probate judges, federal judges and city mayors have the authority to solemnize a marriage. McCready’s legislation would add township supervisors to that list.

“Mayors have been allowed to perform marriage ceremonies since 1972, and they hold similar positions in local government as township supervisors,” McCready said. “My legislation creates parity between the two positions.”

Under the bill, township supervisors who perform marriages must collect a fee determined by the township board and deposit the funds into the township’s general fund. These requirements parallel the current requirements for mayors who solemnize marriages.
