Report of Sexual Assault Attempt Was a Lie: Police

The reporting party's fabrication to hide the real reason for her injuries from her mother "got out of hand," police said.

A Farmington Hills resident who reported that a man knocked her down earlier this month in a sexual assault attempt lied to hide the real reason for her injuries from her mother, police said in a statement Tuesday.

“Through the course of the investigation, detectives found several inconsistencies in the description of the incident as told by the reporting victim,” police said. “Detectives re-interviewed the victim several times pointing out the inconsistencies.

“The reporting victim eventually tearfully admitted that the incident was fabricated to explain an accidental injury that she had sustained in a fall,” according to the statement. ‘She apologized to the detectives, explaining that she initially told the fabricated story to her mother and that ‘it got out of hand.’ ”

The assault supposedly occurred around 1 a.m. in the area of Shiawassee Street and Hamilton Avenue. The individual gave a detailed description of the person she said assaulted her to a Michigan State Police sketch artist, describing him as a white male in his late 30s, approximately 6 feet, 2 inches tall and 170 pounds with a skinny build.

She said he had an orange-colored beard and was wearing black pants — which she described as possibly Dickies-brand — a dark-colored coat and a dark shirt beneath it, and tan work boots. He also said he had a chipped or missing front tooth.

Numerous tips were received from the public, but none of them yielded any information that was credible, causing police to circle back to the reporting party.

Police said they released information about the individual’s confession to alleviate concern and fear among the public about their safety.

No charges are planned against the individual, whose age is unclear. The individual has been referred to counseling, police said.
