Sports Roundup: Andover Baseball Team Extends Postseason Run, Lahser Long Jumper Places 2nd

Brother Rice cruises in lacrosse and baseball; Marian wins in lacrosse and girls soccer.

It was a very busy weekend for student athletes in and around Bloomfield and Bloomfield Hills as several sports seasons draw to a close.

Bloomfield Hills Schools

  • The Andover baseball team extended their postseason with a 4-3 victory over Pontiac Notre Dame Preparatory School on Saturday. The Barons (14-12) now advance to the regional semi-final and play Algonac Saturday in St. Clair.
  • The Lahser girl's soccer team lost 3-2 to Madison Height's Lamphere in the district finals.
  • In track and field, Lahser's Joylisa Davis placed second in the state in the long jump competition, with a jump of 17 feet, 11.75 inches. Andover's Lexi Sinclair placed seventh in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11 minutes, 23 seconds, according to results posted on the Michigan High School Athletic Association website.
  • Two members of Andover's girls tennis team made it to the regional finals during weekend tournaments. Erin Weingarten and Kristen Law, both No. 2 seeds in singles, won three consecutive matches before falling to Elaine Apaza of Bloomfield Hills Marian, and Lizzie Oosterbaan of Portage Northern, respectively.
  • Andover's Hailey Brownstein and Paige Atkinson made it to the finals in doubles before falling to Ellery Shawver and Sarah Holden, of  Grand Rapids Forest Hills Norther.

Brother Rice

  • The Brother Rice varsity baseball team did it again. The Warriors claimed their fourth straight Division 1 district title on Saturday. They beat Seaholm in the semifinals and won a close 3-1 game over Groves in the finals.

    Starting pitcher Nick Linnen held Groves scoreless for five innings. Brother Rice grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning and added two insurance runs in the seventh. Groves scored a run in the final frame, but it wasn’t enough to win.
  • In lacrosse, the boys varsity team beat Clarkston 18-5 at Andover. The Warriors dominated by attempting double the number of shots, controlling the time of possession and getting out to a big 6-1 first quarter lead.

    Brother Rice didn’t score less than 18 goals in any of its three games in regionals and outscored its opponents 62-10 The team is the favorite in Division 1 to win the state championship and win its seventh straight title.

Marian

  • Marian's varsity lacrosse team scored some revenge on Friday night. Last year, the Mustangs lost to Birmingham United 16-13 in the opening round of regionals. Marian evened the scored with a 15-11 victory over Birmingham at Troy in the district finals on Friday It was the third straight close game for Birmingham United in the regionals and the girls ran out of comebacks. It won in the final seconds of the semifinals over Grosse Pointe South, but in the finals couldn’t overcome an eight-goal halftime deficit.
  • The Marian varsity soccer team provided the tournament its biggest news of the week. But it certainly wasn’t good news for its fans. Avondale upset the defending Division 2 state champions 1-0 in a shootout at the Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac on Tuesday. The Yellowjackets scored four goals in the shootout and Marian scored only two.

Cranbrook-Kingswood

  • Track finals: Karen Blake of Bloomfield Hills placed sixth in the 200-meter dash (25.89) and fifth (58.80) in the 400-meter dash.
