What Michelle Obama Liked About a Bloomfield Hills Student's Omelete
Seventh grader Elena Hirsch played on the First Family's names in her winning omelet recipe in the "The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge!"

It may not have hurt that some of the vegetables used in a Bloomfield Hills seventh grader’s entry in First Lady Michelle Obama’s national recipe contest were creatively named after the First Family.
Think “carMALIAzed” onions, “SquASHA,” “BARACKoli” and “MICHrooms.” But what sealed the deal for West Hills Middle School student Elena Hirsch may have been the 157 calories and 7 grams of fat per serving. Get the full recipe on the Epicurious website, where the young chef commented:
“We love to eat omelets, and we love to try new vegetable combinations in our omelets,” Elena said. “We decided to create an omelet for the First Family to enjoy, using veggies to represent each of them. … We hope they enjoy this creation as much as we do!”

Elena was the Michigan winner in the . As such, she was invited to the White House for Kid’s “State Dinner” according to a story on the Bloomfield Hills Schools Facebook page. Hers and other state winners’ recipes were published in the “2014 Healthy Lunchtime Challenge Cookbook.”
Back home in Michigan, she was paired with Chef John from “The Lark” to prepare her recipe in front of more than 90 seventh grade students at West Hills Middle School.
