BHS plays student vs staff

Brighton High School plays their annual student vs staff game for charity.

As November 9th approached, the anticipation built up for an intense matchup in this year’s Staff vs. Students. The seniors were confident with their abilities leading up to game day, Wednesday, November 9th.

“The first day, we plan on going over the rules, doing a couple drills and scouting our options. Figuring out where to put who and where they fit best,” Coach Noah Daberko said.

After the first day, the coaches confidence built after seeing the talent in some of the players.

“I’d say we have a couple players who will stand out, which are Dominic Fiorini and Mason Rozman. I think those are two of the people who could lead us to victory,” Coach Ryan Gabel said.

The staff looked to extend their win streak to seven, and remain undefeated.

The game turned out much closer than anticipated. Both teams went head to head, as a clash of eras went to battle. With multiple penalties towards both teams, it was evident they would go above and beyond to get the W, specifically, Brian Lemons. Lemons made it clear that he wasn’t walking off that court without a dog fight. With some, interesting defensive tactics, to say the least, he managed to shut down much of the student’s offense, while somehow managing to not get ejected.

Another staff player that stood out was Jesse Christner. The staff’s offense relied heavily on the six-foot-five teacher’s vicious turn-around jumper. He was to the students as kryptonite was to Superman.

The game was all tied up nearing the end of the sixth and final five minute quarter of basketball. As the clock wound down, it was evident that the students weren’t going to let the teachers off easy. Going into overtime, there were turnovers on both sides, leaving players and spectators biting their nails.

The staff eventually came out on top, winning in a shocking overtime quarter, 35-32.

“We’re seven and zero. This was by far the best game I’ve seen students play. I definitely had my doubts at times when we were down. There were controversial calls both way, but it didn’t decide the game,” Coach Henry Vecchioni said.

On the opposite side, the students believed otherwise.

“It’s devastating, we had the game all wrapped up. There was definitely a bias in reffing, that could’ve been the difference in the outcome of the game,” Daberko said.

The students’ efforts came up short, but gave the staff their money’s worth. The staff remains undefeated, for the seventh year in a row. Next year’s seniors are hoping to snap this streak and come out on top.
