BHS mountain biking team wins second state championship
The Brighton High School mountain biking team rode into first place at States on October, 10.

Brighton High School’s mountain biking won the state championship for team races on Saturday, October 10th. This is the second state championship under their belt after winning states last year also.
The mountain biking team was a club when they were started but are now considered a sport. BHS principal Gavin Johnson started the club four years ago and it has grown over the years. They have 15 riders on the team, 14 of which went and competed in States.
Their road to the state championship started on August 29th. They won all five of their races against teams from all across the state.

Training started in the spring and went all through the summer. They didn’t have team practices very often but all of them trained on their own on local trails. Drew Harbrecht, a senior on the mountain biking team, said that he would go out and ride three times a week.
“I love riding my bicycle really fast,” Harbrecht said. “There’s no feeling like the feel of cool wind on my face while I fly through the trails.”

Harbrecht has been on the team since his sophomore year and said that he has had a lot of fun since he joined.
“I’m so happy that I get to be a part of a team like this because we all love to do the same thing. I love Mr. Johnson for starting this team and coach T.J. Tyrell for bringing us to States,” Harbrecht said.
After their win, the team got the privilege to paint the high school’s brand new spirit rock. Harbrecht said it was great to paint it with some of his teammates.
“Me and my teammates bonded in all kind of ways at that rock,” Harbrecht said.
BHS has always been good in every sport and this is another one to add to the list. The mountain biking team looks forward to winning the state title for a third year and the years after that.
“I can’t wait to see where the mountain biking team will go in the years to come. I will stay updated on how they do after high school,” Harbrecht said.
