BHS Ping Pong Tournament

Ping Pong tournaments hit the hallways of BHS for DECA members help raise money for MDA

Table tennis is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball back and forth using a table tennis bat. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, players must allow a ball played toward them only one bounce on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. Points are scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules. The game is fast and demands quick reactions. Spinning the ball alters its trajectory and limits an opponent’s options, giving the hitter a great advantage. When doing so the hitter has a good chance of scoring if the spin is successful.

The ping pong tournament arena was located right outside the BHS student store, The Paw, and practice began the week of March 9th and ran all the way until Friday the 13th. The final ping pong tournament was held Wednesday the 18th. The marketing students Andrew Goble and Jason Cojocneanu also involved in DECA, are the head holders of the ping pong tournament. It’s three dollars to play and all the money is being donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

“The overall event went very well with raising money and overall giving the student body of Brighton High School a fun activity to play during all lunches,” senior Jason Cojocneanu

Each year members DECA and advisors all help support MDA and put together events that benefit MDA. The events held are very important to DECA students because it gives athletes and members a community service project entries. With the amount time DECA and the MDA program have been partners, all the members and advisors have raised over $5 million dollars that have helped create free MDA summer camps for many “Jerry’s Kids”.

For some people, they felt the location of the tournament was bad because it made it hard to walk by and some people were jumping around too much and yelling. Lucky hallway security was near to help out with hit foosball victims and to keep the hallway clear and the noise to a minimum.

“I was hit by a flying ping pong ball,” an anonymous bystander said.

When the tables were first rolled out. There were then a crowd to begin to form outside the paw.

“It was one of the greatest things I have seen in my life, I’ll probably never see a match like that again and Leo’s the man,” senior Riley McMahon.

With many participants just playing for fun, there were those few that were playing for the gold. Some have been training for this day for years and finally they can pong it out. With the two finalist being Leo and Timmy, Leo dominated the whole tournament and brought home the gold medal.
