BHS students come together to promote peace

100 BHS students rallied in the gym to create a human peace sign.

75 years ago one of the most influential peace activists was born into the world. People wish to remember John Lennon and his message so that people can spread it across the globe. Because of him, many people have events and celebrations of peace and kindness in Lennon’s name. BHS did something similar in hopes that the community will embrace this message.

The original event was a giant peace sign held in Central Park, New York. In this event people of all ages, gender, and ethnicity band together to form a giant peace symbol with their bodies.

Kristine Nelson, a student social worker at Brighton High School, was inspired by Yoko Ono, the person in charge of the peace sign in New York.

“ I had the idea to do one at BHS to promote the theme of peace related to last year’s Kindness Week,” Nelson said.

The event itself is sponsored by Peer Mediation, See Something Say Something, Gay Straight Alliance, and Students Against Drunk Driving, whom are all involved in Kindness Week in some way.

The event at the high school took place October 20th, right after school at 2:30 to 3 p.m. in the auxiliary gym.

“Brighton has never done anything like it, so I thought I should be a part of it! I felt like it was very successful for it being the first time we did it at BHS. I honestly didn’t think that many people would show up so it was really nice to see all the people there,” senior Danielle Blanchard said.
