BHS Varsity Ski Team ends season with high hopes for next year
Brighton High School falls short of state title this year, but high expectations for next year's season.

The Brighton High School ski team’s season has now come to an end. The team captains this year were Brooke Tyrrell, Morgan Myers, Sam Vaden, and Mateo Coman. This year the team had to adapt to different types of practice since the weather didn’t allow for much snow. They had a personal trainer that had them do endurance and muscle building activities and exercises. The team would go up to Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands to do some weekend trainings. This gives the team a chance to try out a different ski hill and get some experience on a different mountain. The team had the South Lyon Invitational meet at Boyne HIghlands. They placed first at the meet. The training up at Boyne helped them get prepared for the races on the bigger hills. The ski team placed first at every conventional meet this season, the boys team took first and the girls took second place at their divisional meet which was hosted at Mt. Brighton, and the boys took second and the girls took fourth place at the regional meet which took place at Alpine Valley.
“My favorite part of the season is going up north with the team for practices and races, and I also love the team dinners,” said skier Kaira Mercer. The team practiced Monday-Thursday for two hours every week for the entire season. The team had eight boys and two girls race at the state meet which took place at Marquette Mountain. The boys placed ninth and the girls raced individually.
The meet took a turn for the worse when Junior Morgan Myers was training slalom before the met started, she fell hard into the slushy snow and heard a loud pop. Myers was then rushed to the emergency room by her caring parents and X-ray was taken to examine the injured knee. Myers learned that she has a torn ACL in her right knee and will know how to endure a surgery to fix this issue. “I plan to come back next year better, stronger, and faster than ever”, said Junior Morgan Myers.

They put forth their best effort. The team has an advantage for next season because they are only losing three seniors; Moritz Muenstermann, Lilia Staszel, and Mateo Coman. Coach Lundy is hoping to have a really strong team on both the guys and girls side next season. The States meet will be at Nub’s Nob next season and Lundy is hoping for both the boys and girls to make it as a team. “I love the tournaments and regional / state competition. They take place during the day and have a more festival feeling about them,” said Lundy. The ski team had all around great season and the team was made up of a great group of students.
