Brighton High physics students learn from coasters

Brighton High School physics classes were invited to attend the annual trip to Cedar Point for a unique educational experience as well as a day of fun on May 19th. The amount of students willing to go on the trip was so large that two buses were needed for the trip. Many students, as well as teachers, signed up for a day off from the stresses that come with the end of the school year.

"The trip takes a lot of organization, but is definitely worth it," Active Physics teacher Samantha Visel said.

Following the tradition of past Cedar Point trips, this trip is designed as an educational experience. While at Cedar Point, students are given a roller coaster related assignment in order to understand simple physic equations. Specifically the group attending the trip will touch on physic subjects like speed, time, and distance as well as other physic topics that can be closely related to the design and structure of roller coasters.

"After completing the assignments, I hope they took away that science can be fun," Visel said.

All the participants on the trip left at 7 a.m. and had until 5:30 p.m. giving each student plenty of time to work on their separate assignments as well as enough time for student to really enjoy their trip. Most of the assignments were designed to collect data, so once they returned the students would have worksheet to complete that would require the data that each student collected. Besides for the required physics work the students also had an enjoyable experience.

"I enjoyed the trip and the kids talked about the new rides on the way back. So I think they enjoyed the trip," Visel said.
