Measles In Michigan: Vaccination Waivers by County

Statewide, 5.9 percent of new kindergartners received immunization waivers. In one southeast Michigan county, 1 in 10 wasn't vaccinated.

An analysis by the Detroit Free Press shows that 5.9 percent of children entering Michigan kindergartens received waivers for normal childhood vaccinations, the fourth-highest rate in the country.

Following are the percent and number of kindergarteners with waivers for the 2013-2014 school year in select southeast Michigan counties.

Oakland: 10.1 percent, for a total of 1,459

Wayne: 7.1 percent, for a total of 1,043

Macomb: 6.9 percent, for a total of 655

Genesee: 5.7 percent, for a total of 306

Washtenaw: 7.2 percent, for a total of 259

Livingston: 11.3 percent, for a total of 219

The highest rate was in Leelanau County, where nearly 1 in 5 children had received waivers for childhood vaccinations. Only one county, Keewanaw, had no waivers.

So far this year, one case of measles has been reported in Michigan. An adult was confirmed to have measles in Oakland County and has since recovered. There were five measles cases in Michigan in 2014.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the number of measles cases in Michigan has remained at five or lower since 2000, the year the CDC said the virus had been eradicated in the United States.
