Michigan Sees Nation's Biggest Jump in Abortions: Survey
Abortions in the state rose 18.5% from 2010 to 2014 in the AP's study, which used data from the 45 states that collect that information.

Abortions in Michigan increased almost 20 percent from 2010 to 2015, the biggest gain of the 45 states surveyed by The Associated Press, according to a Detroit News report.
In fact, Michigan, with its 18.5-percent rise, was one of only two states to see an increase during that period, the report stated. Louisiana was the other state, with a 12-percent increase, the report added.

The rise in abortions is being attributed partly to residents in neighboring states—such as Ohio—with harsher restrictions and fewer resources dealing with the procedure, the report stated. Nonresidents having abortions in the state increased from 708 in 2013 to 1,318 the following year, the report added.

A lack of public funding for family planning also was named as a factor, the report stated.
Overall, the AP survey showed a 12-percent decrease in abortions nationally since 2010, the report stated.
The AP’s survey used data from the health departments of the 45 states that collect that information, the report stated. California, Maryland, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Wyoming do not collect that data, the report added.
