Winterfest takes place at BHS
BHS hosts its annual WInterfest basketball game and dance.

The Winterfest season was in full effect. From wild spirit days, to exciting assemblies and games leading up to the Big Girls’ basketball game Friday the February 10th against Howell.
There was plenty of behind the scenes that went into spirit week. Although much of the ideas are randomly selected, it still takes a lot not only advertising but planning the days in a way that they work out effectively.
“We do a lot of planning and thinking that goes into Spirit Week. It’s like a big collaboration between all of the people in leadership and we choose from the best ideas and make a team decision. It’s kind of cool process actually. We make posters to help promote the days, the ones you see all over the halls and all,” Lucas Carpenter said.

The Leadership class members put plenty of extra effort and time into making these things possible and trying to make these things as fun as possible for the students. It gives not only students but teachers a way to have a little fun and something to look forward to.
“I don’t think the days this year were all that good. It’s probably an all time low count for people participating in the spirit days. I feel like the majority of people who participate are seniors,” senior Noah Daberko said.

Many other Brighton students feel the same about this. Out of the twenty people asked, about 15 people said they were disappointed with this years attire days. The class attire for Monday the second were drawn out of a hat. Many of the students were not inclined to participate based solely on the options.
“I don’t know, I think it kind of pulls away from the fun of things, the lack of participation by underclassmen, doesn’t really show their school spirit. I think it does build up a hype for winterfest and the game though, it’s a fun thing and having people gather at the game making it a white out against the rival Howell. I personally like the videos, they’re never really serious but I think they’re funny and makes me want to participate, “ sophomore Ervin Foster said.
Last year it was the boys’ basketball team playing Howell after the dance, but this year it’s the Girls basketball team who’s in the spotlight. The motto for the entire week [and whenever we versus them] is “Hammer Howell.” To emphasize the spirit, the marketing class in charge of The Paw was selling custom Hammer Howell shirts that students and staff could wear to Fridays Whiteout and basketball game.
This year's theme for the dance is “Heat Wave,” whereas last year’s theme was a rave. Contrary to most school dances, winterfest for Brighton is in casual attire where people can be more comfortable rather than the usual dressing up in suits and dresses.
