Feds Order Immediate Inspection Of Cheboygan Dam Powerhouse (whmi.com) — Federal regulators have ordered immediate inspections of the Cheboygan Dam powerhouse after historic flooding pushed the structure close to failure, forcing an emergency restart of its long-idle turbines. Additional upstream dams near Cheboygan must also be inspected within days, as state and federal officials warn that hidden damage could still threaten local waterways and nearby homes.

2. Parts of Indian River remain consumed by flood waters (wcmu.org) — Flooding around Indian River and Tuscora Township in Cheboygan County is still leaving homes, parks, and boat launches under water, and boating on the Indian River is closed through May 8. The Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office is offering free water test kits at 825 S Huron St for residents on private wells, while Red Cross teams distribute cleaning supplies and other essentials to help families recover.

Northern Michigan district opens 2026 Summer STEM Camp registration (9and10news.com) — Cheboygan-area students in grades 7–12 can now sign up for paid summer academies and hands-on STEM career camps through the Cheboygan-Otsego-Presque Isle Educational Service District. Programs running June through early August include welding, CNC machining, construction trades, healthcare, surveying, robotics and more, with some sessions hosted at McLaren Northern Michigan’s Cheboygan campus and other regional partners.

5. ‘A real wake-up call.' Flooding shifts Michigan dam safety debate (mlive.com) — Recent flooding that nearly overtopped the Cheboygan Dam is driving a broader push in Lansing to tighten Michigan’s dam safety laws and financial requirements for dam owners. Lawmakers and engineers say the Cheboygan scare shows how private ownership, aging structures, and limited emergency funds could leave communities like yours at risk without stronger oversight and investment.
