In his grant application, teacher Todd Wisniewski, said the Robotics program “highlights Clawson’s elementary students as pioneers in the forefront of the STEM (science, technology, engineering math) curriculum.”

The Schalm Elementary Wonder Soil Classroom Gardening Kit and Caterpillars will be used to enhance the Kindergarten plants and animals units. The goal of the project is to show the butterfly metamorphosis in a hand-on approach. “The students will work together to help the caterpillars and plants grow,” said applicants Liz Kaufman, Nichole McDonald and Amy Sutherland.

As a project for both the science curriculum and as a Michigan Green School, the Schalm Elementary compost kits will enable students to compost materials in the classroom. “Students will understand the benefit of worms in our environment and how compost can then be used in the flower beds around our school,” said teachers Marji Oberer, Kelly Pearson, Bryan Stanis and Christine Wade.

Helen Beamer, Chairperson, remarked “in the past ten years, the Clawson Educational Enrichment Fund has presented over 100 awards totaling more than $30,000 for enrichment programs throughout the District. The Fund is supported by donations from individuals and school employee associations, as well as memorial gifts."
