Clawson Football Counting Down to Regular Season

Trojans ready for scrimmage at Lake Fenton while wrapping up two-a-day practices.

Two years ago the football team won the Macomb Area Conference Bronze division: Last year it made the playoffs. This year the Trojans want to do both.

“I think one of the best things we've got going here at Clawson is we have a tradition of success,” head coach Jim Sparks said. “Kids don’t just come here hoping to win, kids that play football at Clawson expect to win every game. Every year our goal is to win our division and make a run in the state playoffs.”

At practice on Wednesday players echoed those expectations.

“We expect to be perfect,” said senior wide receiver and defensive back DeShawn Gilbert.

The Trojans bring back an experienced group on defense. The team’s linebackers are one of its major strengths. On offense, they are replacing starters at the skill positions such as quarterback and running back, but are bringing back most of the offensive line.

Clawson has a scrimmage lined up for Thursday night at Lake Fenton with four other teams. Coach Jim Sparks is excited to see his kids get some work in with actual opponents for the first time this year.

“This will be a chance for us to do some real, live evaluations,” he said.

His team wraps up two-a-day practices Friday and goes to a regular practice schedule next week. The Trojans season opener is on Aug. 26 at home against Bishop Foley.

“Overall the attitude and effort has been great, so those are good things to build on,” Sparks said.
