Six Clawson Wrestlers Will Advance to State Regionals
Clawson High School wrestlers make impressive showing in districts.
Six Clawson wrestlers extended their individual seasons on Saturday. Stefanos Theodoroplis, Wyatt Remillard, Mike Francis,, Shawn Lynk and Deonte Hill each placed in the top four of their weight class to advance to State Individual Regionals.
Fighting with 15 other schools in Division III, Clawson had to meet tradition rich teams — Dundee, Ida and Flat Rock — with bench-loads of wrestling talent to make the regionals. Clawson Head Coach Keil Jorgensen was beaming with pride about his entire team.
"Tough wrestling with two of the top teams in the state here and lots of solid wrestling," Jorgensen said. "And the boys stepped up today. Overall, I'm very pleased."

With six of his total team of 14 advancing, Jorgensen knows each one gave it their very best on Saturday.
"I'm not going to single out any one individual for their performances today," he said. "They all wrestled good. They handled the basics, didn't make many mistakes and the guys they are losing to are the top guys in the state. I'm very happy with how they all performed."

The next step in Individual Regionals will be Feb. 19 at Richmond. The team has regional action Wednesday at Dundee where they open up against Flat Rock.
Wyatt Remillard took third place in his 112-pound weight class with two wins, a bye and one loss on Saturday.
"It was exciting with a lot of good competition out there today that we had to pass through," Remillard said. "The Ida kid was pretty tough and I was looking forward to going against the Dundee kid to get a shot at someone who is ranked (second) in individual districts but didn't get the chance."
With a 26-14 record on the year, Remillard knows the competition will continue to ramp up.
"It's just going to get tougher and tougher," he said. "So I've just got to train hard and give 110 percent at all times."
Cunningham was 4-1 during the individual meet and saw a few new twists in his matches.
"I had Mt. Clemens in the first round and pinned him pretty quick," Cunningham said. "He did a little throw that surprised me at the beginning and I thought 'oh, I've got to step it up a little bit'. And after that I kind of put a little fire under myself."
Winning his next match, Cunningham then lost when "I didn't finish a move and the kid from (Detroit-Caesar) Chavez (Academy) put me on my back and pinned me. After that I knew I had to step it up if I wanted to continue my year."
Overall, Theodoropolis finished third in the 103-pound division, Remillard placed third in the 112-pound division, Francis was fourth in the 125-pound division, Cunningham was third in the 152-pound division, Lynk was fourth in the 160-pound division and Hill was third in the 171-pound division.
