Alleged Carjacker Jailed on $1 Million Bond, Could Face Life in Prison

John Randolph, 30, was convicted of carjacking in 2005 and had been sentenced to 5-20 years in prison.

A Clinton Township man on parole for carjacking was charged with a similar offense after he allegedly pushed an Eastpointe woman to the ground last Thursday and took off in her car.

John Randolph, 30, reportedly stole the car as the woman stood beside her vehicle, which was parked and running in her driveway in the 21700 block of Cushing, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Eastpointe Police arrested Randolph after an officer spotted a vehicle matching the description of  the victim’s. He was apprehended and arrested without incident at a strip mall near Seven Mile and Gratroit in Detroit.

Randolph was charged with carjacking, which carries a possible life sentence, and stealing a transaction device (the woman’s purse was in the vehicle). Randolph’s bail was set at $1 million when he was arraigned Friday in 38th District Court in Eastpointe.

According to the report, Randolph absconded from the Mt. Clemens Parole Office on Dec. 18. He has two previous convictions, one in 2005 for carjacking and another in 2004 for unlawfully driving away in a vehicle.

He had been sentenced to 5-20 years in prison on the carjacking charge, the newspaper said.

Randolph’s next court appearance is Jan. 14.
