Clinton Township Woman Convicted of 1st Degree Child Abuse

A toddler in her care in May 2015 is unable to walk, talk or feed himself and requires around-the-clock care.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI — A Macomb County jury deliberated for only about 35 minutes Wednesday before convicting Hilary Ulp, 38, of Clinton Township, of first-degree child abuse for debilitating injuries she was accused of inflicting on her boyfriend’s 14-month-old son last year.

The verdict came after a weeklong trial before Macomb County Circuit Judge Richard Caretti. An earlier trial was declared a mistrial after the jury could not reach a verdict.

The toddler, who was in Ulp’s care at her boyfriend’s home in Eastpointe when he was injured in May 14, 2015, still requires constant care and cannot walk, talk or feed himself due to head injuries, The Macomb Daily reported. He also sustained six broken ribs, a broken pelvis and a broken collarbone.

Police said Ulp offered bizarre scenarios to explain the child’s injuries, and reportedly claimed that she has a blood disease so unique that no one else in the world has it. Her defense attorney, Stephen Rabaut, blamed the child’s father, Kevin Kuras, for the child’s injuries, and said Ulp’s stories resulted from a three-hour “incessant interrogation” by two Eastpointe police detectives.

Caretti denied a request to revoke Ulp’s $100,000 bond , meaning she will remain free until her Nov. 1 sentencing. She faces up to life in prison.
