Jernigan, 23, who pleaded guilty to armed robbery and unlawful imprisonment, was ordered to serve a minimum of five years in prison.

Jernigan, a former friend of the victim, and Smith, her boyfriend, were accused of kidnapping the victim from her Dearborn residence at gunpoint early on the morning of Oct. 18 and stuffing her in the trunk of their vehicle. The victim was able to escape by using the trunk release and jumped from the moving vehicle on eastbound Interstate 94 near Livernois in the city of Detroit, police have said.

“This was a disturbing crime which we devoted many resources to in order to quickly apprehend the suspects,” Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said in a statement. “We are grateful that the victim escaped with only minor injuries and remained steadfast in her resolve to follow through with prosecution. We are pleased that justice has been served.”
