HFCC Student Wins Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship

honors student Ali Bacharouch, a Dearborn resident, is one of 60 students nationwide – and the only one at HFCC – to win the Prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship

Bacharouch, who graduated with his associate’s degree from HFCC May 5, was a dual-enrolled student at HFCC and at in Dearborn. He plans on studying Biomedical Engineering at a prestigious, top-tier university. He has already been accepted at the University of Michigan, but is still waiting to hear from Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University and Standford University. Once he does, he will make a decision about his immediate college plans.

The scholarship is worth approximately $30,000 per year and will cover a significant amount of Bacharouch’s educational expenses. This includes tuition, living expenses, textbooks and other required educational fees for the final two to three years needed to earn an undergraduate degree.

To date, Bacharouch is the fifth HFCC Honors Student to win a JKC scholarship. Previous winners include Neam Alazawi, who graduated from HFCC in 2011 and is currently studying at the University of Michigan-Dearborn; Ardeta Gjikola, who graduated from HFCC in 2005 and is currently engaged in  doctoral work at Harvard; Kamal Abuarquoub, who graduated from HFCC in 2006 and is currently engaged in highly specialized lab skills at the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University; and Cristina Toledo-Cornell, who graduated from HFCC in 2008, won a Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship for Graduate Study (worth $50,000 per year) and is currently attending Cornell Medical School.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is a private, independent foundation established by the late Jack Kent Cooke to help exceptionally promising students reach their full potential through education. Launched in 2000, the Foundation focuses in particular on students with financial need. The Foundation’s scholarship and direct service programs support the education of approximately 650 remarkable students each year.
