UPDATED: Woman Shot and Killed Near Fairlane Mall in Dearborn

Witnesses described the woman as "distraught" and "combative." She reportedly almost ran over a police officer, who then opened fire.

DEARBORN, MI – A 31-year-old woman was shot and killed by Dearborn police Wednesday afternoon near Fairlane Town Center after a disturbance at the shopping mall, according to media reports.

The woman was driving away from the mall when her vehicle struck a police officer’s police car, WDIV-TV reports. According to witnesses, the woman almost ran over the officer when he got out of his vehicle, and he drew his weapon and fired shots.

Lt. Michael Shaw of the Michigan State Police, which is handling the investigation at the request of Dearborn police, told the Detroit Free Press that it’s unclear if the woman had a gun.

The incident unfolded about 4:10 p.m. Wednesday. The woman was described as “distraught” by witnesses, who said she became “combative” when mall security arrived and drove away in a black Chevrolet. WXYZ-TV said she tried to run over security officers before police became involved.

The woman was pronounced dead at local hospital, and one police officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The fatal shooting was the second involving the Dearborn Police Department in recent months. A Dearborn was placed on administrative leave after he shot an unarmed suspect who crossed the border from Dearborn to Detroit after a foot chase.

University of Michigan-Dearborn students are being asked to avoid nearby Fairlane Town Center after a report of shots fired there.

No one is at large, according to the alert sent to students at the university.

UM-Dearborn is located at 4901 Evergreen Road, and the Fairlane mall is located at 18900 Michigan Ave.

Other information about the incident wasn’t immediately available.

The university issued its alert at 4:28 p.m. Wednesday.
