City Helps Displaced Apartment Residents with Alternative Housing
Oakman Apartment Residents Rehomed in Motel for 30 Days

(UPDATED) DEARBORN, MI — The city of Dearborn has stepped in to help displaced residents of a low-income apartment complex. Oakman Apartments, in the 5000 block of Michigan Avenue, were cited by the city for safety code violations. The residents were forced out of the buildings on Dec. 8, and asked to remove all items by Dec. 9, FOX2 is reporting.
Mary Laundroche, Director of Public Information for the City of Dearborn, told Patch that the city insisted that the landlord provide temporary housing for the residents. "The owner initially agreed to 7 days, and the city insisted on 30 days," Laudroche said in an email to a Patch reporter.
Laundroche says the city found hotel rooms for all the residents and helped them get settled. She also said that city officials opened the apartment buildings every day from Dec. 6-9 to allow residents to collect belongings. "City staff have also helped to link the residents up to other resources," she said.
