Dearborn Heights Police Donate No-Shave November Proceeds to Kids Who Need Mittens

More than 200 kids at Hillcrest Elementary got hats and gloves; more will be kept in squad cars throughout the winter.

(Posted Dec. 5, 2016) DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MI — A lot of children in Dearborn Heights will have warm hands because police are kept their faces warm by growing their beards last month. During the "No-Shave November" fundraiser, Dearborn Heights police raised more than $2,000 to buy 1,500 sets of gloves and hats, many of which were handed out to students at Hillcrest Elementary School, The Press & Guide reported.

To accommodate the philanthropy-minded police officers, the police department suspended its policy prohibiting facial hair during the month of November.

“For the month of November, we let our officers grow mustaches and beards,” Dearborn Heights Police Chief Lee Gavin told the Hillcrest students. “We bought all these hats and gloves for everyone so when you’re out playing this year in the snow — which should be here shortly — you’ll have some hats and gloves to wear.”

No-Shave November is observed nationally, but observances normally focus on cancer awareness of men's health.
