State police say the suspect is a 38-year-old Redford man who might have mental health issues.

DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MI — State police are investigating after a local police officer in Dearborn Heights shot and killed a man holding a long gun. Dearborn Heights police were called to Telegraph Road around 3:30 a.m. Saturday for a report of a distraught woman.
Arriving officers instead found a man wielding a bolt-action rifle, said Lt. Michael Shaw, a spokesman for Michigan State Police. The man and officer exchanged words. Dispatcher audio indicates the officer thought the man was pointing the weapon at police. The officer then opened fire on the man.
