Dearborn Mayor Encourages Observation Of National Day Of Prayer And Remembrance Monday

The mayor asks residents to remember those who died from the coronavirus.

Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr. is asking residents of Dearborn to observe the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance on Monday, June 1, in recognition of the 100,000 people in the United States who have perished from the coronavirus, and to support their families. More than 100 people from Dearborn have died.

“We need to take time to mourn and remember those who have passed away,” said Mayor O’Reilly. “As we continue to battle the virus, we must also reflect on the loss of their lives in our community, and to offer comfort to their loved ones.”

Mayor O’Reilly asks that Dearborn community pause, reflect, or pray at noon on Monday, June 1 in order to honor all those who have died in Dearborn and throughout the nation.

The National Day of Prayer and Remembrance is being promoted by the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM), which is partnering with a wide range of national religious organizations to both grieve and honor those who have fallen victim to the deadly coronavirus.

Tom Cochran, executive director of the USCM, said, “With the rapid spread of the virus, the scope of its impact, and its mitigation through social distancing, we have not been given the time or space to mourn, lament, and remember those whose lives have been taken.”

At the suggestion of the USCM, June 1 can also be used to focus on ways for our country to improve the societal inequalities the pandemic has revealed.

Leading up to Monday’s observances, on May 29, 30, and 31 – Friday, Saturday, and Sunday – it is expected that many of America’s religious communities, in keeping with their own traditions and practices, will mourn the victims and pray for the healing of our nation – Muslims on Friday, Jews on Saturday, and Christians on Sunday.
