Dearborn Police Announce 2016 National Night Out Plans

Annual crime prevention event get people out in their neighborhoods to learn how to make them safer, but also offers a lot of fun for kids.

Dearborn, MI — National Night Out, a crime prevention and drug awareness that draws Americans out of their homes and into their neighborhoods on the first Tuesday every August, will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Aug. 2 in Dearborn.

National Night Out, a free event sponsored locally by Target Stores and the Dearborn Police Department and nationally by the Association of Town Watch, also strengthens neighborhood spirit and community-police partnerships, while sending a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized, are working with police and are fighting back against crime.

“Dearborn is a prime example of a community that works in partnership with its police department and the private sector,” Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said in a statement. “Together these partnerships have made real strides in crime prevention and quality of life issues.”

Last year’s national campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states. This year’s event in Dearborn is sponsored by Target stores located in Dearborn.

This event is in line with Department of Homeland Security’s “If you See Something Say Something” campaign. Haddad participated in the development of the campaign and has implemented it throughout the city of Dearborn to prompte community involvement in combating crime.

“It’s gratifying to partner with such a strong national retailer like Target who takes a vested interest in the communities where they are located and are willing to show their commitment to public safety in such a meaningful and constructive way,” Haddad said.

In support of National Night Out, Haddad asked residents to turn on their front porch lights on Aug. 2, and to make an extra effort to look out for their neighbors.
