Dearborn Police Host Forum on Use-of-Force

Event brings together leaders and community to help de-escalate tensions after two fatal police shootings.

(Originally published Oct. 25, 2016) DEARBORN MI – Under scrutiny by the Department of Justice for its use of force policies and a two police involved shootings of unarmed suspects in a month, the Dearborn Police Department recently hosted a regional forum on police use-of-force practices and building better community relations. The Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Service and the Police Executive Research Forum facilitated the forum hosted at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center.

Police executives and community leaders discussed the recommendations of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing and its pillars on use of force, and all solicited ideas and dialogue from community leaders, according to the Dearborn Press and Guide.

A focus during the event was building trust between police and community, as well as police training, cultural competency and police hiring processes.

The forum was held at a time of escalating tensions across the country between police departments and civilians, including the targeting of police offices with violence.
