Dearborn Ranked Among Best American Trick-or-Treat Cities

The analysis was based on safety, housing costs and density, weather and the percent of population who are children.

One of the best places in America for children to trick-or-treat is Dearborn, according to a new study by the financial technology company SmartAsset.

The company analyzed more than 300 of America’s largest cities to come up with the list, which put Dearborn in the No. 8 spot. Saginaw, also in southeast Michigan, came in at No. 6.

To find the best places to trick-or-treat, the analysis placed a special emphasis on weather and safety, looking at both the average temperature and precipitation on Oct. 31, as well as crime rates in each city.

Neighborhood density was also a factor (more doorbells equals more candy), housing affordability and the population percentage of children. Dearborn and Saginaw both have more than 1,000 single family homes per square mile.

It helps that Michigan is top producer of pumpkins, and the only state east of the Mississippi that offers top quality trick-or-treating conditions, according to SmartAsset.

Dearborn doesn’t have officially designated trick-or-treat hours, but does enforce its curfew ordinance, which requires persons under the age of 17 to be off the streets from 10 p.m.-6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 p.m.-6 a.m. Friday and Saturday, unless accompanied by an adult parent or guardian.
