Dearborn Shelter Pushes to Find Homes for Overabundance of Animals

The shelter is currently caring for more than 370 animals, including many in temporary foster homes.

With the noticeable arrival of summer in southeast Michigan, warmer temperatures have also meant an overflowing number of homeless animals coming through the doors of the .

The shelter is currently caring for more than 370 animals, many of them temporarily housed in foster homes.

As the facility reaches the limits of its capacity, the shelter is offering special adoption fees and efforts through July 31.

In this two week window, cat adoption fees will be reduced to $5 per cat (4 months and older) and kittens will be two for one, so the cost will be $55 to adopt two kittens.

Additionally, the shelter is extending a “Test Drive the Love” campaign, where adopters have two weeks to become acclimated to a new pet family member (feline or canine) with the ability to return the pet should the match fail, for a full refund of adoption fees.

Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter Executive Director Elaine Greene explained that the hope is to make adoption as appealing and easy as possible for potential adopting families.

“The cat and kitten population is causing a crowding concern, coupled with multiple situations of quantities of homeless animals coming to the shelter," Greene said. "Right now, we want to remove barriers for people considering adoption and hope these programs will help us get the population back to a more manageable range.”
