Gas Explosion Forces Thousands to Evacuate

MELVINDALE, MI — A natural gas main erupted early Saturday morning in Melvindale, forcing residents to evacuate their homes as authorities worked to contain the situation.
According to a report in the Detroit Free Press, a motorist crashed into a natural gas main in Melvindale, forcing the evacuation. The incident unfolded around 2:30 a.m. and shortly after 9 a.m., residents were allowed to return to their homes.
As many as 3,000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes.

A DTE Energy spokesman told the Free Press workers were able to shut off the gas but residual gas in the line caught fire and ignited a three-story training building. The blaze has since been extinguished.
The motorists was injured in the crash and a detective reportedly went to the hospital to conduct an interview.
