MELVINDALE, MI — A natural gas main erupted early Saturday morning in Melvindale, forcing residents to evacuate their homes as authorities worked to contain the situation. According to a report in the <a href="http://www.freep.com/story/news/2016/07/02/gas-explosion-forces-evacuation-melvindale/86631468/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Detroit Free Press</a>, a motorist crashed into a natural gas main in Melvindale, forcing the evacuation. The incident unfolded around 2:30 a.m. and shortly after 9 a.m., residents were allowed to return to their homes. As many as 3,000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes. A DTE Energy spokesman told the Free Press workers were able to shut off the gas but residual gas in the line caught fire and ignited a three-story training building. The blaze has since been extinguished.
