This spring, HFCC’s Theater Arts Department will present a thrilling stage version of the classic adventure novel The Three Musketeers. Adapted by playwright Peter Raby for the Stratford Shakespeare Festival of Canada (where it was revived this past summer), the plot closely mirrors the original. Public performances will be offered on weekends in addition to three weekday matinees for local high school students. The production will be directed by Christopher Bremer, a member of the theater faculty. Bremer also manages the Jewish Ensemble Theater in West Bloomfield, where he has received acclaim for shows he has directed there.
The Three Musketeers, by French writer Alexandre Dumas, was first published in serialized form in 1844 but set roughly 200 years earlier, in 1625. The story focuses on young D’Artagnan, who wishes to join the elite group of royal guards known as the Musketeers. After a bit of a rocky start, he is eventually befriended by three of its members, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Together, the quartet must thwart the plans of their nemesis, Cardinal Richelieu, and face plenty of intrigue and romance along the way.
Rehearsals are due to start in January, and will continue throughout the winter semester. The Three Musketeers runs weekends April 3-13. For more information, visit theatre.hfcc.edu.
